Salish Wool Dog

A new entry for my neverending "Lost Zoo"-series, this time an extinct domestic dog breed. The "Salish Wool Dog" was a very valued dog breed among the Salish-tribe at the North Pacific coastline of North America. The coat of the Wool Dog was used together with the hair of the mountain goat for the production of blankets that were worn by higher ranking members of the Salish People. The dogs were sheared while the shedded hair of the mountain goats was collected. This reminded me of the Inuit who collect the shedded hair of the Muskox in a similar way to make Qiviut Wool out of the hair.

The Salish Wool Dog mixed with dog breeds European settlers brought and as a further reason for the extinction of the Wool Dog was a demise in the Salish culture due to a decimation of the native population from several illnesses also brought by European settlers. The breed is considered to be extinct since 1858. The last recognisable Salish Wool Dog is said to have been died in 1940. Sadly I wasn't able to find any further informations or even photographs of this dog.

I have found during my research only one oil painting with a Salsih Wool Dog in it. I assumed by the appearence of the dog that it might be a puppy or a realtively young dog.  So this dog shown here is my mere interpreation based on the descriptions as them as spitzlike dogs. I thought of Samojedes and classic Chow Chows, whose coat can be used for the production of wool too.
